GEM Thailand Flood: Response and Recovery

Aggressive Attitude Pays Off

You didn't hear GEM Thailand (GEM-T) mentioned during the extraordinary floods in the wake of the heavy monsoon rains of 2011. The entire months-long monsoon flooding was felt strongly by GEM-T employees. Yet, it was their commitment and resilience that enabled GEM-T to respond both rapidly and positively to the potentially disastrous flooding. Our damages were minimized as management and employees aggressively worked to move everything possible. Critical inventory and service support items were moved to flood-free areas. Some final assembly operations were even completed at a customer site.

Chonburi

To ensure that we could continue the broad spectrum of our worldwide services,
GEM-T acquired a manufacturing site in Chonburi, southeast of Bangkok. By the time flooding took over the Ayutthaya area, GEM-T was running at nearly full capacity in Chonburi. GEM-T plans to maintain this facility as a second GEM presence in Thailand.

Back In Business

While never entirely “closed for business”, some machine tools at Ayutthaya were lost to the flood. The Chonburi facility picked up most of that production. The machines at Ayutthaya will be replaced and our supply chain management has materiel moving into the GEM-T facilities at Ayutthaya and Chonburi.

Cleanup

The cleanup after the waters receded has been amazingly quick and thorough. Our flood barriers were removed, with everything below the flood level torn out, cleaned, or replaced. The manufacturing clean room has been gutted and a new one created.

GEM-T Employees

With the Thai manufacturing sector scrambling to combat the affects of the flood, GEM-T managers and teams exemplified the “can do” attitude that makes our Thai employees such a valuable resource. New manufacturing facilities were secured and necessary utilities installed. New machine tools were located, acquired, and commissioned. Critical tooling was rescued from the flood. And many of the employees took up residence at the new plant to ensure continuous progress with the move.

The GEM-T Managing Director stated, “It was quite incredible how everyone simply pitched in to finish the job.”

GEM-T Customers

We want to take this opportunity to thank our GEM Thailand customers for their patience and forbearance. We will be back to full, and expanded, capacity soon. Our commitment to provide you with our hallmark quality and dedication to serving your requirements remains foremost in our recovery plans.
